Overview 2005-2006

The bulk of my work this year will be a continuation of last year and meshing the Technology Continuum with teaching practice.

Portfolio Reflection October, 2005

1.    What goal did I present to my portfolio collegial group?
I would like to continue my goals from last year which was working with staff to improve student learning
    • Progress reports
    • Deciding about Grade 11 laptops
    • Work with staff on evidence that laptops contribute to improving student learning.
2.    What work have I completed toward this goal since my last portfolio entry?  (What artifact(s) will I include in my portfolio to show my progress toward this goal?) *
    • Agendas from Rick and Holly’s Powergrade trainings
    • Directions for progress reports
    • Collection of feedback from progress reports
    • Sample of actual progress reports (shown on line)
3.    What are my next steps in working toward this goal?  What resources do I need? *
    • I need to get feedback on how to successful implement the next quarter progress reports.
    • I need to start looking at how to view progress reports on line so that the group can give me feedback
4.    How has work toward this goal improved student learning or/and my communication with parents and students?  How has work toward this goal resulted in professional growth? What can I include in my portfolio to show these changes?  (These questions reflect the standards of effective teaching as outlined on the previous page.) *
A more standardized approach to the progress report has helped to make communication with parents more meaningful. Rather than 7 different kinds of reports, parents now have a format that they can follow for discussion with their child. This is a natural progression to student led conferences. Also these will show growth over time. We will now meet as a group to decide about putting the progress reports on line.

Portfolio Reflection November, 2005

1.    What goal did I present to my portfolio collegial group?
    • Do we go forward with Grade 11 iBooks?
2.    What work have I completed toward this goal since my last portfolio entry?  (What artifact(s) will I include in my portfolio to show my progress toward this goal?) *
    • EnGauge 2005 Staff Survey results
    • Parent and student surveys
3.    What insights or feedback or questions did I hear today that I want to pursue?
    • I am really pleased that in 18 months our faculty technology use has moved forward. The yellow lines show where we were in the spring of 2004. We have moved significantly in he area of effective teaching practice. I believe the  iBooks have had a significant impact on the faculty and their work with students.
    • Parents support the laptop project and want to move forward. Clearly they believe that the iBook is making a difference to their students' learning.

Staff Development February, 2006

Suzanne and Alice
As a staff we read: Prensky, Marc. "Listen to the Natives." Educational Leadership 63(2005): 8-13.
We then introduced the YHS Staff blog and how to use it
Responses:
    • Listen to the Immigrants: Blog entry
    • Listen to the Natives: Blog entry

    • Get ready for April workshop on using the continuum
    • Put Social Networking links up for parents

    • My professional growth has been impacted strongly. All of the reading about the Digital Literacy skills makes sense to me.
    • I think the social networking session was well attended. I hope that the information will be used by parents. I hope that we can have her come next year for both staff and parents.

Staff Development, April 2006

Suzanne and I wanted to reintroduce the Technology Continuum so that staff could begin to use it in their own practice. We set up a survey to find out information first. We collated the data so that we could see where the strengths in the continuum were (A=always and O=often) and where staff could use improvement. We also wanted to get staff feedback on the pieces of the continuum. We thought the blog would be the best way to get discussion going. Suzanne crafted a Powerpoint to show where we as a staff fell on the continuum and to introduce the blog. On the blog we gave examples of what other teachers are doing. Feedback ranged from expressing what they want to do next year to no comments at all.

Portfolio Reflection April, 2006

1.    What goal did I present to my portfolio collegial group?
Work with staff to improve student learning
    • Debrief the April Staff Development day.
    • Help staff feel more comfortable with collaborative learning online
    • Feedback on the Parent portal for grades
2.    What work have I completed toward this goal since my last portfolio entry?  (What artifact(s) will I include in my portfolio to show my progress toward this goal?) *
3.    What are my next steps in working toward this goal?  What resources do I need? *
    • Think about next year staff development. I think blogging is a great professional learning community and I am going to try it with staff this summer and I will do my portfolio as a blog next year.
4.    How has work toward this goal improved student learning or/and my communication with parents and students?  How has work toward this goal resulted in professional growth? What can I include in my portfolio to show these changes?  (These questions reflect the standards of effective teaching as outlined on the previous page.) *
    • Some people loved the staff development day. I have been hearing the words "digital immigrant" quite a bit
    • Some people HATED the blogging. It put them in an uncomfortable position of public writing. Tis to me is the crux of what we need to work on, Our kids are totally comfortable in this world, teachers tend to be more comfortable with the one to one relationship with a student (receiving a paper, reading it, grading it, and handing it back)
    • Parent portal has been a great success! Kids are checking it all the time and some of the responsibility of making up work has fallen on the students.
